Central Appraisal
District (CAD) in Texas
Texas Central Appraisal Districts are often
Referred to as CADs. For Example; Harris Central Appraisal District is the
CAD (Central Appraisal District) responsible for assessing real property
in Harris County, Texas.
Central appraisal districts in
Texas were created by the 66th Legislature in 1979 (Senate Bill 621, 1979
Tex. Laws p. 2217, ch. 841, Sec. 1). The Central Appraisal District's
responsibility is to locate, list, and appraise property in the district
for property tax purposes for all taxing entities within the district. The
district is required to provide a single appraisal for each property
within their district. This valuation should represent 100% of market
value. Additional responsibilities include: recording property
configuration changes, ownership changes, state and local exemptions,
maintenance of ownership maps, and furnishing appraisal roll information
to the Property Tax Division of the Comptroller's office.
